PHIL LYNOTT - Old Town
120 plays

I’m in an optimistic mood today.  I just revisited the early 80’s solo catelouge of Phil Lynott - the tall brother from Thin Lizzy.  And decided to share…

It’s all very heartfelt and cheesey in a satisfying way.  I am reminded of the spring of 2008, running errands around Chelsea, and having this song come up on my Ipod.  It would always put a little hop in my step.  And who doesn’t need some of that right now??

If you get an extra second watch the terrible music video on Youtube, if only for Phil’s goofy expressions and lip-syncing. Kinda sad to watch, knowing what eventually befell him.  But it can remind us all to keep our heads above water. xx

Nick Lowe - Marie Provost

I went on a trip to rural Massachusetts this past weekend to visit the grave of a dear friend of mine.  The experience was bittersweet, to put it lightly.  However, I was able to introduce ‘Jesus of Cool’ to my accompanying friends.  This album has a lot going on, but Nick Lowe is a forgivable copy-cat - which makes this albums one of my favorites.

Although my trip was ultimately a bit depressing, my friends and I shared a lot of laughs and memories.  In that spirit, I’d like to give you the catchy as sin track, “Marie Provost”.  The track sounds like a Thin Lizzy Song, with lyrics written by Donald Fagen.  It’s a sad and true tale of a long forgotten Silver-Screen-Gem, left to rot in her tiny apartment. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Prevost)  Although, this isn’t a terribly uplifting track, it’s contrasting humor and upbeat manner mirrored the emotions I encountered this weekend.  Enjoy.”Marie Provost” - Nick Lowe

Lou Reed - Gift

Lou Reed, what can you say?  He is a dumb genius.  I love ‘Coney Island Baby’ as an album.  Smooth, quick - and rewarding. All great touchstones.  This deep cut is simple and pretty, as well as cocky as hell.  Enjoy Ladies.

Scorpions - Your Light

This may not be “Winds of Change”, but this Scorpions song sure is unique.  I believe it may be the only Scorpions song that can be categorized as ‘Funky’.  From the bone blazing album Taken By Force, I submit “Your Light”.  Perhaps the only Scorpion song to feature bongos.  Yep. Can you hear them knockin’ ???

Slowdive - Alison

It is incredibly freezing here in Brooklyn, so I thought I’d share some icy Shoegazing-Pop with you.  Slowdive is a really interesting band from the genre’s heyday, and although a lot of shoegazing music sounds very similar, Slowdive has a really original sound.  Taken from their incredible album Souvlaki, Alison is one of those love songs that is both depressing and inspiring at the same time.  It’s also a great song to put on a winter mix for a special lady.  I’m going to boil some water, and try to stay warm.  I hope you are doing the same.
